Simon needs a "pretty face for a portrait."

- Select a portrait you like and describe it. What do you feel it transmits to you? (post the portrait if you can)

Simon tells his model that "if you look at someone long enough you discover their humanity."
- What do you think he means? Do you agree?

Deadline: May 28

  1. First of all this picture inspires me becuase I love basketball and Michael Jordan has been one of the best players ever. He has been known as "air" Jordan and I related to myself because when I play the ball I feel in another world and when the game is over it is like going back to reality. It inspires me the fact that a human being can "fly" if he or she really wants.

  3. I think Simon is right when he says that. For me it does not take a whole life to know someone´s essence. If you do pay attention for a couple of minutes to people who do not realize you are watching at them, you can discover their most valuable qualities and even understand their way of being. So, before judging anymeone, look carefully at them and you may have the chance to find their humanity.

This well-known photograph is called Afghan Girl and it was taken by Steve McCurry in 1984. In this picture, we can see a beautiful young girl from Afghanistan. Through her clothes, we are able to learn certain things about her culture. The use of veil represents oppression and domination. Moreover, I believe that her eyes are the most important detail of the photo: they not only transmit innocence and youth but also pain and suffering. It seems that she is a strong girl living in a cruel society.

Taking into consideration the second question, I can say that I completely agree with Simon’s statement. As I said the previous class, I believe that we really need to be more emphatic. Nowadays, we don’t pay too much attention to others, and that is when we fail. However, I’m optimistic about this situation. The “solution” is quite simple and it’s definitely worth it: At least, we should be more aware of what is happening around us and take notice of it. In that way, we have the possibility to recognize other people’s situations and to “discover their humanity”.

In this portrait there is a grandmother who is kissing her little granddaughter. I have chosen this picture because it shows how special grandparents are. I consider that they are great listeners because they are always there when we need them. In addition to that, I think that they have all the love, affection and warmth in the world stored within them. As I said in class, I love my grandmother! She is like my mother.

Taking into consideration the second question I think that, through this statement, what Simon tries to say is that when you look at people who do not realize you are watching at them, you can discover his/her most important values. I go along with Simon, and I also believe that we don´t have to judge people if we don´t know them.

In this picture, we can see a woman who is crying. I think that the most important details of the picture are her sad eyes and the tear. Through them she transmits sadness, pain and suffering. I believe that this woman was raped and her life is really hard.
According to what Simon says , I go along with him. I think that when we look at people who do not realize we are watching them, we can discover how they are and their most important values.

I’ve chosen her photograph because she transmits me happiness, strength and willingness. Whenever I see her, she is smiling and enjoying life. There are no many people like her. She is really beautiful and extroverted and her broad smile is her most powerful characteristic. She is my model to follow.
I completely agree with Simon. Nobody can hide their way of being or pretend for a long period of time something that is not true. If we look carefully at someone, when she/ he is not aware that you are looking at her / him, we will discover her/ his inner side.

  10. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/66/Johannes_Vermeer_%281632-1675%29_-_The_Girl_With_The_Pearl_Earring_%281665%29.jpg

Hi there sweets! One of the most beautiful and thought-provoking paintings I’ve ever come across is “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by the famous Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Regarded as Vermeer's masterpiece, this 17th century canvas depicts a young girl (believed to be the painter's eldest daughter, Maria) wearing a turban, a cape and a shiny round pearl; which is also the portrait’s focal point (the most interesting and unique feature of a canvas). I have always admired Vermeer’s work, but from my point of view this image in particular transmits the real emotions, thoughts and inner radiance of a human being. The viewer is captured by the subject and her mysterious and intimate gaze; and also by the simplicity of her beauty. I get the feeling that this work was carried out with great love and dignity from the part of the painter, and I believe this is why I like it so much.
For these reasons I think that if a portrait like this one can project someone’s humanity; observing someone for some time can help us get to know something about a particular person. However, it is my belief that humanity is also visible through our actions and beliefs; because it is through our view of life and our virtues that we act. So, I would say I agree with Simon’s statement to a certain extent; since I think humanity is such a deep and mysterious thing that can only be partially comprehended by looking at somebody.

Hi everybody! I've chosen this picture from "Stonehenge" because from the very first time I saw it, it provoked me something special. Every time I see it, it transmits me something I can't put on words but it's a mixture of strength, respect, delight, astonishment, energy; apart from their beauty. Something that seems to be impossible to achieve but at the same time it is possible.

According to the second question, I think that a person can say a lot without saying a word. Body language, attitude, behaviour, their eyes can say a lot; how they feel, what they think, etc etc. The thing is that sometimes we don't pay so much attention to others and that what only matter is ourselves, family, friends and that's all. Perhaps we may change it though is something very hard to get but not impossible.

    Hello!!
I've chosen this picture first of all because I love this flower commonly called "panadero". Second, flowers are full of life and beauty although this one in particular, has only one colour, its texture is extremely soft. Besides, it has a lot of meaning for me because, it simbolizes people's growth. We all grow attached to a root and when we feel the necessity of build up our own life, we start flying to another reality, working really hard so as to go on. I like it very much because freedom can be apreciated in this simple picture if you close your eyes and let your imagination fly!

According to the second question, it's not easy to pay to much attention to somebody else because we are deeply concentrated on only our matters, but if we have the strength to start caring about people's small things, we'll be able to "read" them.
Of course I go along with Simon's statement, because before judging people, you have to look at their faces carefully, their hands or their movements even the words they say and you'll discover their human side.

  13. Hi, guys!
Speaking about portraits, I’ve always been attracted to black and white photographs since I was a kid. I found them really fascinating in the sense that they can transmit feelings and emotions in a different way, they are more appealing to me.
    I’ve chosen this portrait:
    http://www.wallpaperup.com/24286/children_child_cute_people_black-and-white_black_white_b/w.html
As can be seen in the picture I selected, the little girl’s attentive look has something special to me. What’s more, I feel curious to what she might be looking at and what she might be thinking as well. In my opinion, children are amazing and many times, especially when they don’t know to speak yet, you just need to spend little time watching at them to understand their feelings.
As far as the question is concerned, I go along with Simon. I truly believe that if you look at someone long enough you discover their humanity, and that this phrase has to do with being able to see beyond appearances, to discover who your fellow really is. Of course, I must admit that is not easy to do this with every person we meet and sometimes we can misjudge people.

  14. Hello! here is my portrait...
    http://images2.fanpop.com/image/photos/13800000/Clara-Bow-silent-movies-13886979-1419-1800.jpg

The lady's name is Clara Bow and she was a famous actress during the 1920's. It is a half-length, black and white portrait. She has her bob hair styled in soft waves. She has very neat and large eyebrows, probably drawn, to make them more distictive. She has a heart shaped mouth, made up in a dark colour. Her eyes are wide and big, and she is wearing a white fur coat.

I've chosen this picture because I love flappers. They looked so beautiful, enigmatic and gloomy at the same time. They gave an impression of power and strength with their fashion and also, with their lifestyle. They were women who refused to accept the patriachal rules of their society by drinking alcohol, smoking, and having casual sex.

From my point of view, Simon means that when you get to know a person you discover how valuable they are, no matter their virtues and flaws. I totally agree with Simon. I believe that, as we are all different and unique, we should love people because of what they are and try not to judge and condemn them because of their religion, colour, social status, sexual orientation, etc.

I really liked it because it doesn't just show a little girl's face, it captures the essence of the kid, the expression of concern in her countenance and at the same time the sweetness and innocence of every child.
We can't appreciate the background much, but I think that's the whole point of a portrait.

I think that when Simon says that, he means that it is when people feel they are not being observed that they start being what they truly are, they release their essence and true form; and that's something we are not used to appreciate.
I definitely go along with him and admire his capacity to perceive at people in that way.

  18. Hi! This is the portrait I chose.

    http://static.newworldencyclopedia.org/9/9a/Child_laborer.jpg

I´ve chosen this image because it is really strong. What called my attention is the boddy language of the girl. It seems like if she was a little soldier surrounded by all those large machines. It represents child labour during the times of the industrial revolution, although it is a fact that we can find child labour nowadays in some countries. Of course I am totally against this, "child is meant to learn, not to earn".

About what Simon says, I partially agree. I believe that nowadays most people don't show their feelings, emotions or try no to do so. They draw lines to keep everybody out of their life, but lines don't keep other people out, they fence us in. This people may appear happy or energetic at first sight, but sometimes, internally, they may be falling appart. So it is defficult (at least for me) to konw a person just by looking at them.

He is Georges Méliès, one of my idols. He was a French illusionist and filmmaker famous for leading many technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema. He was a prolific innovator in the use of special effects. Therefore, he had the extraordinary ability to transform reality through cinematography.
I sincerely admire this man! He is brilliant, he is genius, really! and every time I look at a portrait of him, I can see someone who fully lives his life, someone with lot of projects, and someone willing to discover new things. But I've chosen this portrait in particular, because it transmits me a desire to go beyond reality and beyond all we know in this world; a desire to fight for your dreams until they come true. Through his eyes I can immediately see a look of satisfaction, maybe because of all the things he has achieved, but I can also observe a strong feeling of greater success, of going beyond your goals, of aiming at the stars, and getting to them! as he got to the moon, in a sense!
At a first sigh, it seems as he is looking at you, but at a second sigh, you can discern he is gazing at the distance, as if he is looking above something, perhaps, he is staring at the sky, but in a defiantly way, because not even the sky was a barrier for him to achieve something. Impossible not to admire him!!

  21. Taking into account the second task, I do no t agree with what Simon says because there are some people who built a kind of barrier around them and you can never guess what they are feeling or thinking. I'm saying this because I'm one of those people, I can't stand someone looking at me trying to find out what is happening to me, I feel intimadated!! I prefer talking and expressing my feelings and thoughts! But! In second thoughts, if I am the observer and not the person being observed (which makes me feel embarrassed, as I've just told you), I can say I really enjoy trying to find what is going on in that person's heart or mind before they say a word, most of all if that person is someone I like or love because looking at him/her without speaking, and understanding each other, is a marvellous experience.
